Socks Continued:

Nylon pantyhose can create foot problems. Nylon is occlusive - it doesn't breathe. The body heat that is trapped inside the nylon causes excessive perspiration. Feet sweat several ounces daily, and this moisture must be allowed to evaporate through shoes and socks. A warm, damp area is an ideal place for the growth of fungal infections such as athlete's foot. Nylon becomes more abrasive when damp and offers minimal protection to feet from friction inside a shoe. Support hose tend to cause the most problems of nylon pantyhose because they are the tightest fitting type of hose. Nylon pantyhose constrict the normal expansion of the foot when walking and may pull the toes backward due to the stretch mechanism of the hose. The cramping of toes and pressure of the hose can contribute to ingrown toenails and hammertoes. If nylons are worn regularly, it is wise to carry an extra pair to change into during the day. A better quality nylon stocking will provide a better fit, and the better the fit, the less likely it is that cramping of toes will occur. When buying nylon hose, attention to proper fit is essential.

Keeping feet and socks dry is very important. Warm, damp areas are ideal for the growth of fungal infections, and damp or moist socks or hose can worsen friction on the feet leading to blister formation. A damp pair of socks is likely to bind and begin rubbing on the skin of the foot. Socks should be changed a minimum of once daily, being replaced with a clean, dry pair. Wash and dry socks before wearing them again.

In general natural fibers such as cotton and wool are better for feet because natural fibers provide a "wicking" effect in which moisture is absorbed by the natural fiber and keeps the feet cool as perspiration rapidly evaporates.

When choosing socks, also consider the climate in which the socks will be worn. All cotton or high cotton content socks are best in warm weather climates, but wool socks provide the best combination of insulation and "wicking" for cold weather climates. If you don't tolerate wool well, a comparable alternative is an eighty-five percent orlon, fifteen percent cotton blend.

When selecting socks (stockings or hose), consider buying those that will contribute to healthy feet first!
